Think Of Others

I know that I have and others have matured and lived with the sense of being courteous and respectful to others as well as having a sense of cleanliness. Exactly what I mean, pacifically, as an example, are the elevators here. When I first moved here I could not bring my two dogs. As it was, one would have been too big anyway. The other would have been of the right size but I was a little too early coming to Imperial Plaza. My dogs would have been fine on the elevators but there are some people here that have problems.

Dog urine (sometimes it covers almost the entire floor area), dog feces (sometimes in the stairways) and other things, sometimes is left on the floors of the elevators and other places. Some people do not take the animals outside enough times or in a timely basis to ensure the animal does not do it’s business before it get outside. Then (it could be the same people), when the weather is bad, the people nor the animal want to go out into the weather. Therefore, the stairwells, parking garage and a few inches past the garage entrance get used.

It would not be a problem if the responsible adult would clean behind their animal but that is seldom done. I am hesitant to walk across the lawns, where I know some people walk their dogs, because a few times I have almost stepped in something. But, the elevators are another matter because we all have to use them, it’s difficult to not step in something, it stinks and I don’t want to clean-up behind a dog that I do not own.

There is still the problem of throwing cigarette butts on the ground. We have a beautiful, trash free area and then there are some people that do not care or believe others will pick it up for them. I smoke cigars and I put my butt where it is suppose to be placed although the all tobacco cigar will deteriorate in the weather. I do not do throw it anywhere because it takes time for the weather to remove the cigar and it looks bad before then. Why can’t others do the same?

Lastly, the dumpsters are still a problem. Not only is furniture (when people move out) left around the dumpster but there are cardboard boxes (not broken down) and garbage bags (not thrown into the dumpster) and just a total disregard to cleanliness. It just seem as if things are left anywhere with the thought that someone will move it and put it where it belong. Am I being overly critical?

I have no answers for any of these situations and, believe me, there is a lot more. I realize these people are elderly and many can not do a lot of things but there seem to be no consideration for anyone else. If the person can not do the proper thing for the animal (good or BAD weather) then why have the animal? The reason can not be because they love the animal or because they have had it for “x” number of years and it is a part of the family. If the animal can not be cared for properly because of your age or condition, then it should not be expected that others will do it for you. It should be remembered that the animal suffers also and can and will get the same diseases you and I will get.

I am frustrated and angry that this have come about. As I have said, I have no solution but maybe someone else have one, short of banning animals and smoking. If so, let me know and maybe I can carry it forward.

By the way, I am staying out of politics this week and will let the chips fall where they may. A lot have happened and a lot will. It’s not over yet. Have a good weekend!

For Every Action

Sir Isaac Newton stated in his 1679 book “Principia” (the book have a longer more complicated tittle to expand it), For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Okay, most people are thinking that this is about mathematics or physics and they would be correct but take this a little further. Actions culminating into reactions affects everything.

One example, when trash is piled around a dumpster and the dumpster is overfilled, it can be considered an action that needs correcting. Here at Imperial Plaza, this has occurred many, many times, especially when the trash pickup is missed or delayed. The reaction is an accumulation of bugs, flies, odor and, maybe, rats. Then add to that reaction more odor, which bring disease. And to carry the reaction further, the accumulation of odor, flies, bugs and rats brings medical emergencies (remember reading about “The Black Plague”?) and death. It is not that bad during these modern times that we have to worry about such a terrible event occurring, I’m just saying it is possible when you look at the worst that could happen. There are many seniors that have weakened immune systems and they are susceptible to many things which almost anything could trigger a medical event.

One more example, looking at retirement, looks at the progression of life starting with being born. You become a child who morphs into becoming a young adult which bring on a young retiree and finally there is the cantankerous retiree. The last line of progression can apply to almost anyone at any adult age. I will use that as an action. These days many people can act sane one moment and be off the deep end the next moment and this could also apply to anyone of any age. That is the reason everyone should be aware of what they say or do to someone (action) because of the equal and opposite reaction that will occur. The reaction could mean aggravated assault or go so far as (the extreme) death, or, at the very least, verbal or physical insults.

There are many, many people that are very sensitive to such things and it can be seen by simply looking at Republicans. Yes, I went there. Much more than Democrats or any other faction, Republicans get very offended and defensive when anyone speak badly about them or President Trump. Watch the news networks when a Republican is questioned, the narrator usually can not get a word in edge wise and they look very angry. This also applies to Black people. Other people must be careful with the words used. Just remember, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

On the lighter side, I want to mention one more thing. Imperial Plaza went to the Virginia Living Museum (the turnout was sparse) and it was wonderful. This was our second trip (we went last year) and new things were added. The legos display was beautiful and there is so much to see, especially for the kids. Of course I took a large amount of pictures and made another file on my computer for them. As a senior, it’s good to get out and enjoy the day. I can’t tell you how many days I have left or even be able to go on these outings. Enjoy yourself today because tomorrow is not promised. Then… be kind to your neighbors because you’ll never know when you’ll need them; also, insure your words are soft and sweet because you’ll never know when you’ll have to eat them. See ya!!!!

Imagine

As a senior citizen and retiree, I have lived through many presidential administrations and, like so many others, can make a comparison. However, in my opinion, the one that we are in now stand out more than all the others combined and it’s not for the good. Although this administration is in it’s infancy in my eyes it have caused more hate and discontent among all the different parties than anyone I can remember in history.

But, take a moment and just imagine these things. Compare things President Obama have done or tried to do, because President Trump dislike him so much, with President Trump and the things he and his people have done and want to do. Just imagine the uproar that would have been sounded with a tenth of the things Trump is doing. Not only think about the tweets but the phone calls, smugness and overall dislike by the world community. The world community, in my mind, count more than anything that have been done because we can not be alone in the world and survive (read my religious blog entitled “No Man Is An Island” at faithingodministries.net). We must have countries that count and trust in us and we have to stand by them as our needs arise.

Just imagine what would have happened or said if Obama was caught up in the Russia ruckus and people perceived him of ling. Just imagine what would be said or happened if Obama tweeted instead of conversing with the people or his cabinet. Just imagine what would have been said if the medical bill came out of the House and Senate the way Trump’s did. Just imagine what would have been done if as many people nominated to be in Obama’s cabinet were proven to be unqualified as Trump’s have. Just imagine what would have been done if Obama was unprepared to run the administration as Trump is. Just imagine what would be said if Obama abandoned the environment. Just imagine Obama saying thousands of jobs were created but only hundreds were. Just imagine the uproar the Obama nepotism would cause. Just imagine the uproar if an unqualified Obama family member sat at a world leader’s table. Or simply imagined what would have happened if a special prosecutor was formed to look at things. Just think about the comments if Obama’s wife refused to hold his hand or a foreign leader bypassed his hand for another.

I could go on and on but I’ll stop at just a few “imagine” and let that sink in. It’s not that I dislike Trump it’s I dislike unfair treatment of the one man over the other and the attempted coverup of almost everything. Fair is fair and to dismantle a legacy because of a dislike of Obama, although the actions were honest and good, is ludicrous. To lose a fabulous world standing because of insane speech and actions should give pause. Then with more and more accusations of Russian collusion, Obama would have been run out of office but Trump gets a pass with very slow investigation. There seem to be not only his hired people but also the family that is involved with the Russians.

Hopefully Congress will find enough spine to do something before it is too late for this country. This country has always been great and it never went down hill until now. To be the most disrespected nation where few want to shake our President’s hand is just head shaking wrong. As the other free countries need us, we will need them and now it’s up in the air if we can count on them as we intentionally isolate ourselves. Us against the world won’t work and to blame ex-President Obama for the debacle is not only false but a shame.

As a senior citizen/retiree I do not have many more years to care about it, I just want you to think of that someone thinking for you and filling your mind with lies, geared to deflect you from seeing what is happening. But do not think it is no concern of yours or your way of living. It will effect your way of life, especially yours and family. Politics is politics and there is no way pass it. But for those of you that wanted him, you have him.

I want to add one more thing if you think seniors don’t know how to have fun. I have added our monthly “Dinner Dance” that is held at Imperial Plaza. This month’s theme was “Sock-Hop” and many dressed as they did in that era. Each month is different and, with a live band, dinner and drinks, we tend to have lots of fun with the cares and worries of the world not even thought of for a couple of hours. What is life without FUN???

Retirement Woes

Growing up, there was this unrealistic assumption that being retired was a goal to achieve in order to live the waning years of life in complete peace, tranquility and ease. Yet, as this age of life is finally here, the stark truth of retirement is realized and most of it is not entirely the way it was envisioned. Those that are not overly wealthy find daily worries, wondering about the amount left in an account after the last shopping trip and before another sum is credited into the account. With that, to some, not being enough worry, politics enter the picture. Most elderly people think politics does not overly concern elderly individuals because they have retirement money, social security money and other income, for some not all).

These monies are for housing (even if the house is paid there is maintenance, taxes and insurance), food and utilities (not counting clothing and mild entertainment). Then account for the insurance for any medical issue. Politics have a strong and lasting effect on all of this. As one catastrophic example, imagine a person depending on retirement money from a corporation. Then imagine politics forcing that corporation to declare bankruptcy. Now the corporation cease to exist and so goes the retirement money. And, in a domino effect, there goes the way of life for the retiree, that is if the retiree is not independently self sufficient. Also think about depending on work place health insurance. If you stop working, where does health insurance fit in?

As the political scene tease, change and outright stabs a person in their heart, the retiree, like me, wonders what will tomorrow bring. Will I have enough money for housing needs, food, medical care and, politicians don’t want to hear this, entertainment. Politicians have their way mapped out for them and they don’t worry about their future. We the people pay their way. People with money don’t worry because they have their life and they don’t worry or care about those without money. Sure, they give a little to this cause or that cause but for the most part it is only a drop of water in a very large bucket.

We all have to worry about our political scene as it is presented to us today not yesterday. We not only have to look at what is happening now but what will happen in the future when certain bills are passed and bestowed on us and our children. What hoops will our children have to jump thru to reach retirement (or will they be able to retire). The life of peace, tranquility and ease will be snatched away and replaced with doubt and angst.

I’ll throw one more wrench into the machinery and leave this train of thought alone for a while. Don’t believe being ex-federal (civilian or military) leaves you immune to all that is happening in politics. The politicians are attempting to not only put deep cuts into things non-federal but they are looking at the military (don’t believe everything that you have heard about the military), federal hospitals and everything else that is federal. It will be a little slower coming than the rest that is proposed but, if they have their way, it is coming. Everybody that does not have a large sum of money will be on shaky ground with no where to run. And remember one other thing, if you voted for the present administration, you either have what you wanted or you will get what you want. Oh well.

In closing, although this is not a woe, my wife and I, again, was able to enjoy an entertainment before cuts are made in my monies. Where did we go? The annual Hampton Jazz Festival in beautiful Hampton, Virginia. As usual, the artists this year were outstanding and, of course, I saw my favorite, Fantasia. The line-up look like this: (Friday Night) Jill Scott, Kem, Brian Culbertson, Gerald Albright & Jonathan Butler. (Saturday Night) The O’Jays, Fantasia, Anthony Hamilton, West Coast Jam featuring Richard Elliot, Norman Brown & Rick Braun. (Sunday Night) Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Patti LaBelle, Ramsey Lewis, Bobby “Blackhat” Walters. All of this was performed in the Hampton Coliseum and it was the 50th Anniversary for the festival.

This fall, across the street from the coliseum at the Convention Center, will be the annual Hampton Jazz Legion. We will be there also because, like I have said before, I love jazz and want to attend live performances. Both programs are always sold out well in advance and so are hotel spaces. In fact, people usually get tickets and hotels a year in advance of the performance.

Try to stay safe and cool. Have a great summer and be kind to others. See ya!!!

It’s Nice To Be Retired

Don’t be alarmed and think you have your days mixed-up, I will be away for the weekend. I am, as usual, going to the Hampton Jazz Festival. I love jazz and try to attend as many jazz concerts as I can attend. Therefore, my blog will be posted a day or two before the normal time I’ve chosen to post. I have been trying to get my link to Facebook to operate the way it should. I just can’t seem to pair my blog pages with Facebook. I don’t have problems pairing other sites but Facebook is stubborn for some reason or the other. Then there are the spammers and hackers on Facebook telling Facebook friends to re-accept me as their friend. Anyway, to get my two blogs, uninterrupted, just go to the blog page and click “follow” as well as “like” (I don’t get enough “like”). This way, each week, when I publish one of my blogs, it will automatically go to whomever mailbox that clicked “follow”. Never miss a blog again.

My religious blog (some people call it Trump bashing) is faithingodministries.net and that is with a tega4180@gmail.com e-mail address for comment, etc. The other, about retirement and other things, is tega227.com with tega227@gmail.com for comments, etc. So, if you want the blogs to come directly to your mailbox, privately, without hassle or missing a blog because of a screw-up or something, just hit “follow” and be among the first to get the blog. I really would appreciate comments and sharings with your family and friends with them following also (I try to acknowledge as many contacts as possible).

The hawks are flying but are staying either in the nest or close by the nest. They are only flying from tree limb to tree limb and have not ventured out into the vast feeding areas around Imperial Plaza. I am sure mama and papa want them to leave as soon as possible if not sooner (can you say “empty nester”). That nest look too small for two adult birds and three almost grown chicks. I don’t see how they do it but they manage and with these big wind storms we have been going through lately, make for a wild ride in that tall oak tree. It is also a beautiful sight to see the adult birds soaring up high on the wind currents, watching for a meal. We have plenty of rabbits and squirrels for them to feast on plus it also enables the garden to stay clear of intruding rodents.

Imperial Plaza had a bus trip to Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home, and the trip was, as far as I am concerned, fabulous. The estate was huge, well manicured and the interior of the house was larger than I thought it would be. In fact, we only had time to see the house and cemetery. Too bad we had to leave Sally Hemmings’ house, the slave quarters, gardens and underground tunnel (just to name a few other things) for some other time. For a late lunch, we stopped at the Wood Grill buffet in Charlottesville and pigged out. We all had more than enough to eat and saw other things to eat but was too full to attempt it. On the way back to Imperial Plaza, we ran into very heavy rain but it had stopped by the time we arrived at our destination.

Then There Were Three

Wow, and I thought there was only one. I have taken a lot of pictures of the hawks and have even taken many pictures of the chick in the nest. For days I have taken pictures of the chick alone and being fed. Then, a few days ago, as I was taking a few more pictures of the chick in the nest, I noticed two other birds. At first I thought mama and papa had joined the chick until I zoomed-in. Then I saw three chicks. Can’t mistake the adult birds and the chicks because the chicks still have the ruffled down on them. Pretty, to say the least. On my Facebook page I have posted a few pictures for all to see. If you want to see the pictures I have posted this month and last month, go to the page and you’ll see many pictures of the adult birds and of the chick(s). Now there are three, getting large, chicks. I don’t see how two adult hawks and three medium sized chicks can fit in the nest. Oh well, Mother Nature can do things we thought was impossible.

I have mentioned before about the proposed smoking ban at Imperial Plaza; well, nothing have publicly come out but the rumors are everywhere. Some places where people normally smoke have changed to other places but, still, there isn’t anything official. I say that to say this; there is a group of people that get together and smoke outside the main entrance of their building. They can be found there all day and into the late evening. One day, since the purported change, they have moved to the bench where I take pictures of the hawks. I don’t mind because I went there when they left but I wasn’t happy about them being there since it’s their bench also. Why, you are asking? Well, there is a stand-up ashtray beside the bench but these people rather drop their cigarette butts onto the ground when they could use the ashtray . There are a few of us that use that bench and this have never happened before. I hope they get their act together before there is a complete ban.

Thinking about fake news (?false news?), I have been taking pictures of the birds and squirrels around Imperial Plaza for quite awhile. Couple that with many new faces moving into Imperial Plaza. The other day, as I was passing through the Dogwood lobby area, where a few residents usually sit talking to each other, a resident that have resided here for a few years called me over and asked about the hawks and squirrels. I was introduced to the three or four new residents that was sitting there. When the conversation came around to the white squirrel at the main gate and the one behind the Boxwood building, a new resident corrected me by saying there is only one. She told me the one by the main gate is solid white and the one behind Boxwood have an off colored back which make it not solid white. I didn’t say anything. I pulled out my phone, bought-up my photos and showed the resident the white squirrel playing behind Boxwood (it’ll let a human get with-in three or four yards of it). The resident saw that it was white but said the photo does not show the back because the back is not white. I still did not say anything. I then showed a profile picture of the squirrel and one of the rear end. The resident looked startled and sat back into the seat. All smiles and grins left the resident’s face. A new resident and already knowing everything, more than the people that have been here much longer. Beware of things that are told to you without any proof or what you assume is fact without proof.

I’m posting a little early because I’ll be gone for the weekend but I want to say to all, have a safe and happy summer. Wherever you are, keep your eyes and ears open to everything around you. The world is much different than when I grew-up (in my day a person did not have to be always watchful), so be on your toes. See ya!!!

Just News

Great news…on Facebook I labeled a photo of the white squirrel “long way from home”. I was wrong, that is not the white squirrel that reside and play near the front gate of Imperial Plaza. This is a second squirrel that now reside at the rear of the Boxwood apartment building. It is great to see another squirrel because there was three when I first moved here and all three died (one became hawk food, one was hit by a car and the other disappeared). I hope our hawk family doesn’t take it for lunch.

Thinking about the hawks, I am awaiting the sighting of the young ones. They should be getting large because the female hawk is on the rim of the nest most of the time and I seldom see the male. If I can get pictures of them learning to fly I will share them on my Facebook page. It should be soon. I have included a couple of pictures of the female on the rim of her nest.

The Wednesday bus trip to the Virginia War Memorial was good. Since I have been there many times as part of the Mighty Pen Project, I ended up being an unofficial guide for some of the attendees although there are people there that gives good information. After the Virginia War Memorial, we ate lunch at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. All I will say about the food there is that it was not what most of us were used to eating. The menu was geared mostly toward the vegetarian, of which I am not. Although it was very cloudy, wanting to rain, the rain held off and all was good.

My wife and I spent last Friday and Saturday at the great grand son’s naming ceremony. Had a great time, the baby never cried and he stayed awake much longer than usual. After two days in northern Virginia, my wife and I kept going to Maryland Live. We were to come back to Richmond on Monday but the weather forecast indicated pouring rain. We decided to stay an extra day and return when the roads were dry. WRONG! It drizzled rain Tuesday morning but it was mostly dry. But, the trip wasn’t wasted because I returned with a small profit.

We made it back in time to go to the White Squirrel for dinner, enjoying Eugene’s singing and, of course, dancing. The only complaint I have with the White Squirrel is it is always out of regular beer. I guess the reason is there is always lite-beer that no one want. There are many other places for us to go but most people here do not drive and is stuck with whatever there is here. Shame.

Well, the warm weather has been gone for a little while and will remain gone a while longer. I would call it a wake-up call to let people realize that Mother Nature will do what she want when she want to do it. It’s chilly but, I’ll make a huge bet, in two or three weeks everyone will be crying for it to be cooler. People are never satisfied, I guess.

Enjoy Memorial Day weekend. Be careful. Be vigilant! Have fun! Remember those that served and are presently serving brought America to where it is now and is keeping our our way of living secure. This weekend is not a weekend of celebration but a weekend of remembrance. God bless the USA and the troops that keep this nation free.
