I Remember

It is ludicrous that people are still hating, riling, and believing stupid rumors about wearing masks and getting COVID vaccine. This have been going on far too long for anyone to still have an argument against it. After millions upon millions of people have taken the vaccine and only a handful of people developed an adverse effect from it there should not be a wait and see attitude.

               I am an old man now and I still remember seeing pictures and news clips of people in iron lungs to help them breath. I also remember going to school, on a Saturday, to eat the sugar cube to eradicate people having to be in an iron lung. It worked. Only people in my age group and older can remember the iron lung. There was not much fighting about the vaccine and the iron lung is a thing of the past.

               I remember getting measles and chickenpox (among other ailments) were normal diseases and sooner or later you knew you would catch it, just like everyone else. Then vaccines were developed for that and now it is seldom that anyone catch the diseases. Now everyone can walk around with the knowledge that there is not anyone around them with it.

               I remember when I was a child, I heard about the Tuskegee experiment. I did not understand exactly what that was but later in life I fully understood. The implications of the experiment still affect Blacks today because the story of the experiment is passed along, I would imagine, forever. There were other experiments on people especially those ordered by Hitler in Nazi Germany.

               I remember seeing the Television news, reading the daily news, and seeing the internet about what those that do not take the vaccine or wear masks say. Like, along with the vaccine shot the government have a tiny tracking capsule mixed in the serum. There are many conspiracy theories going around and far too many people are believing them with little or no proof. Here is one; a six-year-old child have a heavy menstrual cycle after getting the vaccine shot. The truth is the person is forty-one years old, not six years old.

               I remember when my daughter registered for a school season, I had to show proof of many different immunizations that she had to have before she was allowed to register and go to school. This was not only for her protection but also for the protection of her classmates and, in turn, the classmate’s family. The same thing applies for this vaccine.

               It is said that it has not been out long enough to prove it works. My response to that is to ask the multimillions of people around the world if it works. Then the naysayers say they made the vaccine too fast to be any good. I say, why wait for half the world to die before there is a vaccine? If a family does not want the children of that family to take the vaccine, homeschool them. That way the family does not have to take the children to a school that they disapprove. There is also no fuss and no fight.

               I remember a lot of things that can be added here but these are only some of the highlights and a little of what is on my mind. I have my three shots and I wear my mask when I am out among the public. I truly wish others thought the same way. When they catch the COVID I will remember them when they are gone.

I Have My Rights

Do I want my freedom and my rights? Yes, I want racial freedom and my rights but that is a small part of what I want. I want what the radicals want. Pacifically, the freedom to not wear a mask. Wait a minute. Is that what I really want? The (I will call them radicals) radicals say it is their right to do whatever they want to do, including to not wear a mask. To make others not get an abortion. Let us look at this a little more and let us pretend I am one of the radicals.

               I have the right to be free to do what I want to do because this is a free country, and the government should not tell me what I can or can not do. Putting it that way, if I do not want to stop at a traffic signal it is my right to continue through it. The government made that rule and if I feel I do not want to abide by it then I will continue through without stopping.

               I have the freedom to drive the streets and highways as fast as I want to drive. They made the vehicles to speed at an enormous rate then it is my right to buggy down the road however fast I want to go. I did not make the law therefore I do not have to abide by it. Get out oof my way.

               If I do not want to wear a mask, then I do not have to. The doctors are quacks, and they cannot control my body nor control my life. So what if it is to protect others. I do not care about others. I am told it will help protect me, but I have a strong body and will not catch whatever the hoax of the day is. Prove to me it is not a hoax.

               I do not want the vaccine. It is my right (freedom) not to take it. It was an emergency experimental drug. So what it is now FDA approved. My ex-president said I can take certain poisons to rid my body of the hoax, to poison whatever ails me. Those doctors are quacks and I know better than they do. I will take certain animal medicines because it helps them and will help me also. Others say not to take animal medicine because it may kill me or, at least, make me very ill. Who are they to say this? They are not doctors. Oops, doctors are quacks. Who should I listen to?

               What I have written is satire about the COVID-19 pandemic and people not taking one of the vaccines. I believe in most of the doctors (there are a few I would not recommend treating my dog). As far as wearing a mask is concerned, I have worn worst, and it is better than wearing all the apparatus that is given when you are in the hospital with the virus. It will then be too late for the vaccine, horse medicine, or saying you are sorry and will do whatever needs to be done.

               Rights are fine, to a point. Many laws were written to protect you as well as others. The great majority of laws were written not to harm people but to help the populace. I have rights but only to a certain point. Not to abide by the laws or FDA approved medications given by a medical school trained doctor, will bring harm to me and others. I am making a plea for people to take one of the vaccines and wear a mask. People are dying (including children) every day because they enforced their right not to wear a mask and did not take one of the vaccines.

I Do Not Understand

The thinking was that by now America would either have extraordinarily little COVID or, at least, be in a herd immunity state. Not so as of now. That is why, when I see or hear of the many people that refuse the vaccine, I ask why? I am retired military and have had my share of shots, seldom knowing what the shots were for. I also remember taking the polio sugar cube when I was in junior high school. I did not turn my back on taking the sugar cube because I knew of the iron lung and did not want to be in that position.

               In my childhood, whooping cough, measles, chicken pox and more was the norm until doctors had shots for that and more. Young people today live in an era that is free of a lot of diseases that were normal during my young years. I did not have to look hard to find someone that have been affected by one or more of these illnesses. I have had a couple of these, and I am still here. I took my shots, and I am still taking shots.

               What I do not understand is why people see what have happened when a person become ill with COVID and still do not want to take the vaccine. I do not understand the medical workers not wanting to take the vaccine when they see what happens when a person become ill without the vaccine verses what happens when they do get the shots. I am perplexed about the whole thing.

               I have seen news film clips of people that have the virus, laying in the hospital and either still believe the virus is a hoax or still say they do not believe in the vaccine. There was one clip where the sick person was asking for the vaccine and as the person was told it was too late, they started to cry. I do not understand why they did not take the shots when they had the chance.

               Why is taking the shots politicalized the way it is? When the shots have saved millions of people, why are people making it political? I do not understand why people lives are sacrificed for a political win and the people that are the sacrificial lambs still believe in them. What will these lambs gain from this? I would bet every dime I have that these politicians, that are loudly talking against the vaccine, have taken it willingly.

               I have always thought the doctors, nurses, teachers, etc. were smart people. That is why I do not understand this resistance in taking the vaccine. Now besides the variant-D virus there is another on the horizon. If the people continue to act in the way they are we will never rid ourselves of the virus and, unfortunately, there will be another lockdown, fights because of it, and many more deaths. I do not understand why people want to take the chance of death when they have the chance to continue to live. Maybe I am missing something, I need enlightenment.

Nothing Changes

I am an old man. Almost ancient to some people. I have seen a lot and have been involved in a lot. Most of the things I have seen and been involved in I have not told anyone. Most people would not believe it anyway. Actually, the things I have seen and done have been done many times before me and is now repeating. Maybe not in the same way but it is happening. History repeat itself time and time again. People either learn from history and do not go down the wrong road as before or suffer the consequences when they do.

               On the news I see the inequities against people that are not White, especially against Blacks and I only see repeats. Years ago, it was worst, and it seem as though it is trying to get back to that. This week my wife and I went to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, of which we are members. While walking through a special showing of ‘The Dirty South’ for members only I pointed to a picture in a glass enclosed frame to my wife (my finger was about six inches away). A museum employee immediately ran up to me and said to be at least an arm’s length from the gallery items. I stepped back and apologized for being too close. Later I saw a White man sitting on a gallery display and the same museum person looked at him and did not say anything. Then, unfortunately, when it comes to voting rights, White people, especially the middle class, are caught up in the suppressing the Black vote. Everything possible is being done to accomplish this. History is definitely repeating itself.

               Then there are the people that holler about their rights. Yes, they have a right not to take the vaccine and not to wear a mask. But they do not have the right to mingle with healthy people and infect them. They do not remember how lepers were kept in leper colonies away from everyone else. Maybe that should happen again. When one of them cough or spit on someone on purpose, to me, that is attempted murder and should be handled accordingly. If anyone attempts to get around the mask and/or vaccination rule, they should pay a heavy price. I want to live a little longer and get back to normalcy.  

               Then there are the political fights. Not about what the people need or want but about not liking the other party. This happens even if what a party want is good for all it is no good because it is the other party. The Congress was elected to legislate the will of the people that placed them in the position to do so. Yet they lie, steal, hoodwink their way to wealth and prosperity for their own good and not for the people that elected them. Even when their party does something bad and get caught, it is okay for their party and unbelievably bad and want to prosecute when it is the other party. No equality, no equal justice. Just finger pointing.

               I am an old man, and my time is almost up. I could go on and on, point after point but what good will it garner? Who will listen? History will repeat itself when what we are going through is over. We, who are alive and seeing it now, may not be around to see it happen again. But there are some things that never end, like the bickering between the parties and that is because we are allowing it to happen. We cannot change history and we cannot change the future, but we can do something about it now. It is up to the people younger than I am because I am an old man seeing nothing changing.

This Pandemic

Whether you want to believe it or not the pandemic is still with us and is, believe it or not, getting worst. Sure, a vaccine is on the horizon, but it is not here yet and exactly how it will be distributed have not been determined, so far. Even after the serum distribution start it will be a long while before most of us are in line to get it, maybe in the middle of next year.

               The thing that bother me most are the people that are still calling the pandemic, COVID-19, a hoax. There are people on death’s bed and doctors and nurses have given up on them. Some of the patient’s final words are that the virus is a hoax. There is no hope for them, physically or mentally. I was in Red Lobster and heard a man tell his wife that more people die from the flu than COVID-19. Really?

               Worst than that are the people that go to crowded bars, restaurants, clubs, parties (this includes private and family), rubbing shoulder to shoulder and a face mask is almost unheard of (the Red Lobster was almost empty). The people that does this truly do not care about themselves nor anyone else. Yet, they want this pandemic to be finished without them doing their part to stop it. All that these people want (the vast majority are young) is to party, to have life the way they had it before the pandemic, to do what they want to do when they want to do it.

               Everyone has their rights to privacy and to maintain their own body and life the way they want to do it. However, they do not have the right to endanger someone else life in the process. To contract the virus not only endangers my life but the life of the healthcare workers that are attempting to save the ill person’s life. It is the same as other professions, like the police, when a person is requested not to do a particular thing, the person say they have a right to do it and does it anyway. When things go wrong, they call for help to save them from the thing they were requested not to do therefore putting the professional’s life in jeopardy trying to save them.

               There have been fights, attempted murder, assaults, etc. because someone asked another person to wear a mask. People are heard saying they have a right not to wear a mask, the virus is a hoax, and they are young enough that it will not harm them as much. Most of these people have never been in the military because, in the military, you learn not only to follow orders but to be without things for the good of the whole. You do it without grumbling because you know it will not be forever.

               This pandemic will never end with people disregarding science and recommendations form experts in the medical field (non-political, of course). If everyone had done their part in attempting to stamp out this virus, schools would be safe and have in-school learning, everything else would be back to normal or almost normal and we would be looking toward what is coming next. Thanksgiving was a disaster, and we are almost back to square one.

               We are all suffering through this pandemic, whether you have COVID-19 or not, because life is not what it used to be and never will be. Those of you that call this a hoax, does not want to wear a mask and do not and those of you that whine about the slightest change in your life remember you are not helping the situation. When you get the virus, do not call the doctor call the mortician, because it is a hoax and doctors do not cure hoaxes.
